I wanted to interview original people to find out what is originality. Rebecca (20 years old) has learning difficulties, she can't allocate properly her memories and she often forgets things. She couldn't define originality - it was too difficult for her, but she easily drew something original.
Mel (61 years old) is a full time daddy and part time chef at a pub. I think he is a very original man with interesting experience. I asked him twice about originality (interview and questionnaire) and twice I got slightly different answers. It was very difficult for Mel to define originality, especially because he tried to give an original answer.
At the end I interviewed myself as I thought it could be quite an original interview, It was also difficult for me to define originality and my answer turned out to be quite complicated, but hopefully understandable.
We are all different so originality means something different to all of us. |
B: What is originality?
M: For me it comes back to the Big Bang, the beginning of everything. Originality is a purple pussycat. I don't know. Seeing something that has never been seen before. And burst a new creation.
B: Do you think everything is original or nothing is original?
M: Everything is original, because it has its own individuality.
B: Do you think you are original and why?
M: Completely, totally. There is no one else like me and never will be.
B: Not even if they cloned you?
M: No, because environmental influences would be different and they will never cut their tail nails and on the some day cut mine.
B: Do you know any original person?
M: Every person is original.
B: Do you think some people are more original than others?
M: No. Some people conform, there are the same, they are not original. I think everyone is individual, but because we conform we are given illusion of being the same.
B: How to create something original? Is it possible?
M: Yes, it is possible. There is a deep complexity in creating even an original thought, because of individual influences and what has gone before. Nevertheless, all our influences are individual and therefore our creations are original.
B: What is the most original thing you have ever created?
M: My first child.
B: So the second child is not that original?
Oh, even more original. They are completely different, that affirms their originality.
B: I think you are more original than others, I think it is because you have an original personality and original experiences, Could you tell me a little bit about your experiences, about your life?
M: I was born out of marriage. My mother was an indigenous Southern African and my father was a British sailor during the Second World War. The government of my country did not allow them to get married. My mother kept me and I grew up as a man while South African during apartheid. This caused a personality dilemma, because I appeared to be completely white living in a non-while neighbourhood. At the aged 21 I met a girl, we both got arrested under the immorality act, which meant we both had to spend 9 months in prison, but she did not, because she didn't know, that I was coloured. After 6 weeks I escaped to England and I was never allowed to go back to my country until 1994.
I then worked as a printing compositor in Southampton, and then I came to London and worked in an advertising agency for 6 years (Colman Printers and Vally) as an account executive. Then I worked for Courtalds Stroke Tupon as and advertising manger. Then I was a partner in a fish & chips shop in Harlesden. The I did various odd jobs: stagehand in a theatre, builder, decorator, I had a maternity shop in Madrid, I did special effect painting and decorating. Then I started cooking, because I fell off the leather. And I cook since. Now I am a single parent with 2 original sons.
B: You had a really good job, why did you choose to do something different?
M: Because I was bored. I lost ambition.
B: Where did you work?
M:South Africa, UK, Australia, Malta, Italy, Spain, Germany, Northern Ireland, Cyprus.
B: Your CV must be very long
M: I couldn't make a CV
B: When has the last time you wrote a CV?
M: 20 years ago
B: Do you have any original hobbies?
M: Genealogy of racehorses, I collect friends and I bring up my children.
B: Do you think it is easy to create something original?
M: No, it's not, but it's possible.
B: Do you think some things are more original than others.
M: Intrinsically yes, but no. |
